Partial Discharge Detection

AMS-8

General Description

The AMS-8 Acoustic Monitoring System is a general purpose, 8-channel acoustic monitoring instrument designed to detect corona, partial discharge, loose internal parts or other applications where acoustic event monitoring is desired.  The AMS-8 is easily transported from one location to another.

It is capable of logging 8 individual channels of data for 30 days with one second data point resolution. The AMS-8 also supports 4 auxiliary inputs (4-20mA) and 1 common alarm output (dry contact).  Data is stored in a removable Compact Flash memory card for long-term storage and ease of data retrieval.  Data retrieved from the memory card is analyzed using Excel.

The diagnostic capability of the AMS-8 is greatly enhanced by the 50/60 Hz AC Synchronization Module and the optional Waveform Digitizer for vibration analysis.

The AMS-8 can be accessed for instrument setup and data retrieval over the phone (refer to the Remote Telephone Access section for details).

General Operation

The AMS-8 stores test results on 8 channels every second for a period of 30 days. The 30-day storage acts like a circular storage, i.e. data over 30 days old will be written over by the current data.   The test results include the signal level of the highest peak during any 1-second time frame, the average signal level and the activity count.  Each test result is time stamped for further analysis.  Up to 8 acoustic channels are supported by a single AMS-8.

A Compact Flash memory card is used for data storage.  The 30-day data files are pre-allocated on the memory card.  Each AMS-8 is shipped with 2 memory cards, one is installed in the unit and the second card (with empty files pre-allocated) is used for card swapping purposes.  Since all data points are time stamped, it is not necessary to erase the old data file for a new test. (A start test marks the beginning of a new test.)  Data can be downloaded to a PC for further analysis after swapping out the card.

The AMS-8 can be controlled over the telephone (refer to the Remote Telephone Access section for details) or by using the local control panel.

Remote Telephone Access

The AMS-8 allows remote access through a conventional landline or a satellite telephone connection.  A phone jack is provided on the front panel of the unit for this purpose.

The AMS-8 is password protected.  Equipment setup, real time test data and test summary can be accessed using a set of predefined commands.

This feature allows monitoring and data logging of equipment in a remote area with minimum field trip requirements.

Partial Discharge Monitoring System

Triple 5's Partial Discharge Monitoring System (PDMS) uses surface mounted acoustic sensors to listen for low-level arcing and partial discharge in high-voltage circuit breakers, gas insulated circuit breakers, and transformers. A complete system will listen to 16 test sites with 12 sensors at each site. Total capacity of the system is 192 sensors.

50FD Version C Fault Detector

DETECTS:
Transformer defects including: synchronous and non-synchronous partial discharge, loose parts, defective tap changers, flow restriction, turbulent flow in oil cooling pumps and high vibration levels.

Analyze substation transformers for defects to avoid potentially dangerous conditions caused by partial discharge. Listen for the mechanical noises produced by loose parts and the destructive arching in tap changers. Monitor the oil cooling pumps for laminar flow, turbulent flow and flow restriction. Set up a predictive maintenance schedule to periodically test transformers to prevent costly maintenance and maintain safe operating conditions.
